Philip Whalen, born in Portland, Or. on Oct. 20, 1923, was part of the Beat generation of poets who lived in San Francisco.
Before this he had served in the Army Air Forces during World War II and received his B.A. in 1951 from Reed College. Whalen
spent much time in Japan and in 1973 became a Buddhist Monk living first in a Monastery in San Francisco and later in Santa
Fe, N.M. Philip Whalen died June 26, 2002 in San Francisco, Calif.
